Why Cosmetic Sclerotherapy?

OVERVIEW

Telangiectasias, spider veins, and varicose veins are considered common cosmetic concern for both women and men. Sclerotherapy treats veins that are twisted and enlarged, known as varicose veins. Varicose veins are usually in the legs. Sclerotherapy also treats telangiectasias and spider veins, these are mild forms of varicose veins. Sclerotherapy usually works best on small varicose veins. Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins and spider veins.

HOW DOES SCLEROTHERAPY WORK IN VARICOSE VEIN TREATMENT?

During sclerotherapy procedure, a chemical solution is injected into the veins being treated to close them off. The veins seal shut, impeding blood flow to those particular veins. Instead, the blood moves to healthier veins in the same area of the body. Because there is no blood flow to the unsightly veins, the visibility reduces, and the vein ultimately disappears. This in-office treatment works well for many people, especially on smaller varicose veins.

HOW SUCCESSFUL IS SCLEROTHERAPY?

Sclerotherapy works well on smaller varicose veins. A session may get rid of an estimated 50% to 80% of injected veins. In some cases, the treatment doesn’t work. If this happens, different solutions or another method, like laser therapy may be an option.

Of note, results aren’t usually instant. It can take weeks or months to see results

What are the potential benefits and risks of this treatment? Benefits of vein sclerotherapy include:

-No anesthesia: With enough compression from the bandage on the vein, there’s little pain. Compression may also help with bruising and swelling.

-Fairly quick results for small veins: Spider veins usually respond to treatment in three to six weeks, but it may take three to four months for larger veins.

-Lasting treatment when successful: Although you may need more than one injection session, the problem doesn’t happen again when treatment works. But you may need treatment for new varicose veins that form. 

RECOVERY AND OUTLOOK

How long will it take for one to feel better post sclerotherapy? It doesn’t take long to recover from vein sclerotherapy. After treatment, Most individuals can drive home and get back to their normal everyday activities. Common post operative instructions might include:

-Walking, this is good for recovery. 

- Wearing support stockings or compression wraps for three to seven days to compress the treated vessels. Regular support stockings from a retail store may not work.

-Avoid strenuous activities for a few days

-Avoid direct sunlight to treated areas 

-Avoid hot baths/showers
